Early Days and Naming

The original name of Concepcion was Bacjawan, which translates to “the place of the bacjaw trees,” known as mangroves in English. In 1855, the town was officially recognized as a “pueblo” and was renamed Concepcion in honor of the first daughter of the first governor, Felizardo Azucena.

Military Significance

This sub-province in Northern Iloilo included the capital town of Concepcion and other areas such as Ajuy, Balasan (modern-day Batad, Estancia, and Balasan), Lemery, San Dionisio, and Sara. However, this military district was abolished on April 11, 1901, when American forces took control and established the civil government of Iloilo.
